Covetable First Place

The Washington Post recently featured this well-appointed rowhouse that is home to four recent college graduates. I am impressed by how these young ladies created an enviable home so quickly and on a budget. One of the featured tenants, Heloise McKee, is the niece of Catharine Roberts, one of the owners of Catharine Roberts, Oliver Dunn, and Moss & Co., a Georgetown antiques and home furnishings shop that is a must-see for any design enthusiast. Although McKee had access to her aunt's expertise and basement full of treasures (lucky duck!), she clearly possesses a strong personal design aesthetic all her own. See for yourself.

I'm embarrassed that my own home doesn't have nearly such a finished or cohesive look. But I'm inspired to keep going. Great job ladies!

Welcome Home

Dear friends, old and new,

I've logged many hours over the last two years reading inspirational blogs about interior design. After much consideration, I've decided to join interior designers and decorators and fellow design enthusiasts in the wonderful exchange of ideas and inspiration that blogging offers.

I had planned to start last summer, when I was staying at home with my wonderful son. But then I rejoined the income-earning workforce and learned I am pregnant with our second child, so I put my plans on hold. Not intentionally, of course, but because there are only twenty-four hours in each day.

My passion for creating a lovely but comfortable home dates back many years. My mother's natural gift for creating a beautiful home on a budget is the root of my interest.

As for my experience, I have enjoyed learning about decorating and interior design for the better part of the last decade. I have renovated and decorated three condos. All three included kitchen renovations of varying budgets. I've painted rooms, cabinets, and furniture. I've sewn curtains and pillow covers. I would love to slipcover and reupholster, so perhaps you will join me in that endeavor. One day, a friend asked for some design assistance. Then another. Then another. And here I am.

Now I am working on decorating our larger home with the added challenge of making it child and pet friendly. And husband friendly, too.

Progress moves slowly around our home these days, so it takes a lot of motivation to keep pressing forward. But I have fun, and I believe I am giving my family a gift by working hard to create a home that is attractive, comfortable, and functional.

Although my blog won't likely generate much interest, I think it will be a great outlet for organizing and documenting what we're able to accomplish.

Welcome to my guests. Please make yourself at home.
